Urge Co-Sponsorship of H.R. 4157, Preserving America’s Family Farms Act

Take action to preserve the ability to employ young people on farms and ranches by urging your U.S. Representative to cosponsor H.R. 4157, the Preserving America’s Family Farms Act.  Introduced by Iowa Congressman Tom Latham (R), this bill will stop the DOL from finalizing or enforcing its proposed regulation on employment of young people on farms.

The Department’s proposed rule will:

  • Stop parents from employing their own children on farms that are not organized as a sole proprietorship; employment of children on farms organized as partnerships or LLCs would be banned;
  • Stop anyone under age 18 from doing jobs that require use of any tool or machine that is not hand- or foot-powered;
  • Stop children under age 18 from participating in activities involving animals like cattle, pigs, horses and others because children don’t have the “cognitive ability” to anticipate danger from a startled or frightened animal;
  • Stop children under age 18 for doing anything (like branding, vaccinations, or castration) that might cause pain to an animal;
  • Stop children from working on ladders, in lofts, or from doing any kind of construction work on a farm.

DOL’s proposed rule is far-reaching and will impact many young people working today on family farms.  Stop the DOL’s rule; take action today by asking your U.S. Representative to cosponsor the Preserving America’s Family Farms Act (H.R. 4157).

    To stop young people from working on the farm is absolutely crazy. What a marvelous opportunity for young folks to become responsible young adults. Of course there are some dangers, they need to learn abut them too but to stop their work?! Crazy. Their parents likely need the help in many cases. The government is overstepping here and this needs to be stopped. We can overlook illegal immigrants coming to work on our farms but not allow our children to?! Farming is American and so is having your children helping you.

      Good news…there was so much outcry that they reversed the decision. See the Daily Caller article dated May 1, 2012.
